Angie Perry asked a question
My question is about the amount of Social Security monthly amount I am receiving. This is not about SS Disability. Even though I still work full time, I began receiving Social Security monthly benefits after I turned 62 years old. I am now 66 years old and have been divorced for quite a long time. However, I qualify to receive benefits from my ex-husband's benefits because we were married over 10 years - I know that policy. At the time I signed up, the Social Security office where I lived in Rockingham County, Reidsville, NC, advised that to qualify for benefits from my ex-husband's benefits, that his amount of benefits would have to be twice as much as my monthly benefit. So I gave them my husband's information to look this up to see what my ex-husband's monthly benefit would be, and their answer to me was that he would not be receiving twice as much as my benefits (my small amount was around $960.00 a month, and they would not divulge to me what amount my ex-husband's amount would be). Trusting them, I took them at their word. That was 4 years ago. To be sure, the more I thought about it through the past 4 years, I just last week asked my ex-husband through email (and he emailed me so I would have it in writing) what his monthly benefit would be, and was shocked when he said his monthly benefits will be over $3,000.00 a month! Now, my question to you, please advise what my rights are to prove that the SS office in Rockingham County did not tell me the truth. I need an attorney's assistance because it appears the Social Security people not only owe me back pay based on my ex-husband's monthly drawings, but also need to change my monthly benefit amounts to draw off my ex-husband's benefits. I am very upset about this. Thank you for any assistance or advice you can give me. Ms. Perry, Greensboro, NC 27410 2/28/2014
